The repair of a malfunctioning window air conditioner is cheaper than a central air system. You need to repair or clean your air conditioner when it is not giving enough cool air. 1.       To access the internal parts of the air conditioner, you need to unscrew or remove the grill cover in front. You may need to remove the grill using the flat end of the screwdriver.

2.       Slide the unit out of its place in the window. You may need help from others in removing the heavy appliance and in placing it to a firm and sturdy surface.

3.       You need to remove the air conditioner’s mesh filter and clean it with warm water, detergent, and bleach. Often, this part of the unit is covered with thick dust which makes it difficult to provide quality cool air. Shake the filter to remove the excess water and allow it to air dry.

4.       Clean the evaporator coils with the use of hand-held vacuum or attach a brush to the hand of the vacuum cleaner. You can use a heavy duty brush to clean further and remove the dirt that remains on the evaporator coil.

5.       Inspect the fins of the evaporator coils and fix them if there are any bent parts. You can use a fin comb to straighten a bent fin. Run it up or down to straighten the fin.

6.       You also have to look at the unit’s condenser coils. Clean it as you have done with the evaporator coils. Vacuum the coils and use a brush to remove the dirt from the coils. You may also use a fin comb to straighten the bent fins.

7.       Lastly, clean the unit’s fan blade. Use the vacuum or wipe it with a clean cloth to remove the dirt and dust particles. You can now put your air conditioner back in place. Be sure to reinstall the mesh filter and replace the grill.
